The CONABIO, Comisión Nacional para la Biodiversidad, or National Commission for biodiversity, has been a very important institution for Mezcal. The map they created in 2005 has been a point of reference for the industry as well as mezcal aficionados.

Dr. Abisai García-Mendoza, who is part of this presitigous institution, is probably the foremost agave connoisseur in the world. He is the curator of The National Collection of Agave, specializing in the department of Taxonomy of Agavaceas. Thanks to his work, the most important publications about agaves have been made.
